Two 9-round Swiss tournaments over four and a half days:

  1. Northumbria Masters Open (open to all, eligible for title norms, FIDE- and ECF-rated);
  2. Northumbria Challengers (Under 2000 FIDE, FIDE- and ECF-rated);

One 7-round Swiss tournaments over three and a half days:

By Train: Newcastle is 3 hours from London and 1.5 hours from Edinburgh.

By Car: St. Mary’s is 3.5 miles from Junction 77 (Kenton) of the A1(M), and 3.7 miles from the Tyne Bridge.

By Metro: St. Mary’s is 0.3 miles from Longbenton Metro station (on the Yellow Line from Central Station).

Time controls:

ALL-PLAY-ALLS, MASTERS OPEN, CHALLENGERS, MAJOR & MINOR: All moves in 90 minutes, plus 30 seconds per move.

JUNIOR RAPIDPLAY: All moves in 20 minutes, plus 10 seconds per move.

Congress Regulations:

1.      Masters Open/Challengers players should a) be Gold/Platinum ECF members, b) be members of another national federation or c) pay a £11 Pay-to-Play fee.
2.      Major/Minor players should a) be ECF Silver members or above; or b) pay a £11 Pay-to-Play fee. Junior Rapidplay players should a) be ECF Junior Silver members or above; or b) pay a £6 Pay-to-Play fee.
3.      For the Masters Open and Challengers, FIDE Standard Play Ratings will be used.
4.      For the Major and Minor, ECF Standard Play ratings will be used.
5.      July 2022 FIDE & ECF ratings determine sections and rating prizes. (August 2021 FIDE and ECF ratings will be used for pairing only.)
6.      Players may be moved to a different section at the organiser’s discretion.
7.      Entrants after August 16 will be charged a £10 late fee.
8.      Players normally win only one prize. Prizes may be adjusted based on entries. Prizes will be shared, no tie-breaks will be used.
9.      Age categories are as of January 1, 2022.
10.    Players may take up to 3 half-point byes for Rounds 1-6 if requested before Rd. 1
11.    The default time is 30 minutes.
